Chateau Lanesson Wine dinner
Smart Bordeaux buyers have long followed this excellent Medoc estate. Owned by the same family for six generations, this estate is one of the lesser-known gems of Bordeaux, owing to a huge miscalculation by former owner Louis Delbos. In 1855, as preparations were being made for the Universal Exhibition in Paris, Lanesson was selected as one of those to be listed in its wine classification, (reportedly at 4th growth level). However, at the last minute, estate owner Delbos decided that the exhibition and its wine classification was of little benefit to his estate¡¯s already sound reputation and withdrew his sample wine from that ¡°bureaucratic nonsense¡±. The wine was never classified and Lanessan missed out on being a part of the most influential wine ranking the world has ever seen.
Located just to the south of Gruaud-Larose in the commune of Cussac-Fort-M¨¦doc and with 40 hectares of vineyards, the blend at Lanessan is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon based and is aged in oak barrels for 18 months. The wine can easily be confused with a St Julien or Pauillac, being austere when young but revealing marvellous depth of fruit and richness, as well as considerable finesse, as it ages. In the best vintages the wine can continue to improve for up to two decades or more.
These days Lanessan is notable not only for its fine wine but also for its glamorous winemaker. Madrid native Paz Espejo has an enormous love and appreciation of the wines of Bordeaux, and just the right blend of knowledge and passion needed to develop this estate. Come and join us for dinner with Paz at Balthazar Brasserie on Friday March 5th. See for yourself why she has risen to the top of her profession as we gain some of her infectious enthusiasm for the wines of Lanessan.
