- Fortified wines
The first light dusting of snow in Shanghai recently had us rummaging in our own personal wine cupboard to check on our stocks of fortified wines. For us, enjoying the warmth indoors with a good book and a glass of Port or Madeira on an icy Shanghai evening is truly one of life¡¯s greatest pleasures.
Why fortified wine? First, fortified wines having a higher alcohol content than regular wines which helps to act as a warmer and keep winter chills at bay. The second advantage is their longevity. Unlike regular wines fortifieds can be kept for a considerable amount of time after opening. An open bottle of Madeira can last for many months if not more than a year if well stored, and most styles of port can be consumed over at least a fortnight, perfect for sharing with friends or when you simply cant drink it all in one go!
