Broadbent
Selections
Imported from Madeira, a volcanic island 400 miles
off the North African coast, Broadbent Madeira is
the product of Michael and Bartholomew Broadbent,
both world renowned Madeira experts. The wines were
hand-selected on the island by Bartholomew Broadbent,
Chairman of Christie's International Wine Department
and the world's most experienced taster of Madeira.
Bartholomew Broadbent is deemed one of the world's
foremost authorities on Port and Madeira. He is
credited for being responsible for the growth of
Port consumption in North America during the 1980¡¯s
and was responsible for the re-introduction of Madeira
to America in 1989, instrumental in its growth since
then.
Madeira is fortified with Portugese grape brandy
to 20% alcohol, usually leaving some residual sugar
in the wine. Shortly after fermentation is complete
the wine is heated to approximately 115 degrees
and held for six months. Madeira is the most versatile
of all dessert wines because its¡¯ natural high
acidity enables it to stand up to all desserts without
being overwhelmed. It is ideal for occasional consumption
because it is fully oxidized during winemaking and
will not deteriorate after opening.

Vinho Verde
The Vinho Verde region is along the Atlantic
Coast of Portugal. The name translates to
¡°green wine¡± because the grapes are harvested
to retain crisp acidity and make wines that
go perfectly with seafood. This is a classic
Vinho Verde. Light in colour with a slight
spritz. On the nose it is fruity, light and
lively. On the palate it is light [only 9%
alcohol], refreshing and delicious. |
