Chateau Cantemerle
Cinquièmes Crus
The origins of what we know today as Chateau Cantemerle lie in the Middle Ages, when the chateau formed one part of the Médoc's defensive line against attack. However the vineyard itself as we know it today wasn’t founded until 1643, when one of the manor houses on the estate was renamed Cantemerle, quite distinct from the medieval fortification where the name originated. Cantemerle always gets a special mention in any discussion of the 1855 classification as many believe it deserves a much higher ranking than its current fifth growth status. General opinion is that it deserves a ranking at least as high as a third growth classification. As it stands today, Chateau Cantermerle wines offer very good value. The style is rich, with supple fruitiness, and an intensely fragrant bouquet. With proper storage they will offer a decade or more of drinking pleasure.

A beautiful wine of elegance and intensity, this medium-bodied, dark plum/purple-hued 2007 possesses a floral-infused bouquet, sweet, plush, red and black fruit flavors, and an endearing, silky texture. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

Chateau Cantemerle 2008
Cantemerle tends to produce somewhat understated and restrained, but finesse-filled wines. The medium-bodied 2008 offers elegant notes of raspberries, red currants, crushed rocks and oak backed up by good concentration, sweet tannin and no hard edges. |
