Chateau Cos d’Estournel

Deuxièmes Crus

No one will argue Château Cos d'Estournel makes some of the finest wines in Bordeaux.  No one will also tell you to drink Cos d ’Estournel in its youth. This unique Chateau situated in the southern tip of the commune of Saint Estèphe, over looking the vineyards of Château Lafite-Rothschild.The vineyards of Cos d'Estournel are planted in the southern tip of the village of Saint Estephe, on a true geological curiosity.

The vineyard spreads around the château on 173 acres. It is split into about 30 parcels of land. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines (60%) find the soil of their choice in the thin layers of gravely soil situated on the summit and on the southern slopes of the hill where they can gain maximum benefit of the gravel. On the other hand, the Merlot vines (40%) excel on the eastern slopes and on the slopes where the Saint-Estephe limestone bed shows on the surface.Plantation is extremely dense (8000 to 10000 vines per hectare) and the average age of the vineyard is 35 years old.Only vines over 20 years of age end up in the Grand Vin. The harvest is manually picked too.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel 1990
The 1990 is a spectacular wine, and, along with the 1986, 1982, and 1953, one of the four finest Cos d'Estournels made in the post-World War II era. This super-concentrated wine possesses a roasted herb, sweet, jammy black fruit-scented nose, with noteworthy opulence and succulence. Pure and full-bodied, this concentrated wine conceals more tannin than it is presently revealing. The wine is open, flattering, and impossible to resist.
