Stonyridge Vineyard

Stonyridge Vineyard is a world-renowned Cabernet-blend winegrower, located on the beautiful island of Waiheke, near Auckland, New Zealand. A nearby rock quarry gives an indication of the soil type. It is a poor low-fertility Waitemata clay saturated with nodules of magnesium, manganese, and iron oxides. "I have seen many New World attempts to emulate the Bordeaux method of growing grapes, none more convincing than that of Stephen White at Stonyridge...A vertical tasting did no more than confirm my view that Stephen White is making New Zealand's finest Cabernet-based red wines."- James Halliday, Wine Atlas of Australia & New Zealand

Stonyridge Pilgrim 2009
The 2009 Pilgrim is a blend of 81% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, 3% Viognier and 1% Grenache. Taken from barrel, the nose is reticent at the moment, very taut with crushed stones and wild dark berries and with further aeration there is just a hint of pinecone. The palate is medium-bodied with very good poise, lovely crisp texture with brambly black fruit on the cedar-tinged finish. This has great length and should age extremely well.

Stonyridge Luna Negra 2009

Impenetrably dark and vibrantly coloured, aromas of black plums, berry fruits, and dark chocolate, a cheeky wink from smoky vanilla and spice, lovely earthy, savoury notes and high toned violets. A dense and voluptuous palate packed with sweet ripe cherry, berry fruits, chocolate, and well integrated American oak, this has volume but is light on its feet and dark leather and savoury tones allude to the wines potential. The wine is held together with abundant ripe and powdery fine tannins with a fine mineral edge. The decadent, inky, Luna Negra is like ‘doing an energetic salsa with a Cuban beauty queen’

Stonyridge Larose 2009
The 2009 Larose is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Malbec, 15% Petit Verdot, 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. It has a very Bordeaux, Left Bank style nose with very good definition: blackberry, bilberry, a touch of black olive and tea leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but fine tannins and great clarity, though in its nascent stage it comes across very masculine and obdurate. The finish is beautifully delineated and the assertive grip suggests that the ’09 Larose will be one destined for the cellar.
